As a magician who loves transforming special occasions into unforgettable memories, I had the pleasure of performing at the stunning The West Mill in Derbyshire on 23rd July 2025. This very quirky, Grade 1 listed venue, nestled in Darley Abbey Mills, offered an enchanting backdrop for the wedding of Daniel & Kari, with a total of 100 guests soaking in its unique industrial charm.
Setting the Scene for a Quirky Wedding
The West Mill is renowned for its fascinating history, dating back to around 1784, when it was built to house cotton spinning machinery. Its journey through the industrial revolution to its revitalisation in 2015 as a vintage wedding venue is truly inspiring. With its exposed brick walls, barrel-vaulted ceilings, Georgian windows flooded with sunlight, and a breathtaking outside space including a south-facing courtyard, garden, and river walkway, it’s the epitome of a historic yet modern wedding setting.
When I arrived, the helpful staff ensured I had early access, and the facilities included a dedicated room to get changed, plus plenty of space for my close-up magic performances. The good roads and ample parking made it easy to find and access, adding to the relaxed, welcoming vibe of the day.

My two-hour close-up magic set was a big hit, especially the highlight where I read someone's mind to reveal a movie they were thinking of. The amusing twist was that not I read their mind, but their friend did — much to everyone's surprise! A funny moment that stood out was when a guest confidently declared I wouldn't guess their phone password, yet I did — a fun reminder of how magic can delight even the most confident skeptics.
The venue’s character created incredible photo opportunities, blending industrial charm with natural beauty, perfect for capturing memories. The couple and guests enjoyed canapes and a three-course meal, while I mingled among the tables delivering interactive magic that truly engaged everyone.

Overall, despite minor challenges, the day was truly memorable, with a venue that inspires and captivates.
